Oct 24 Holy Hill

Previous

Although Fall is my favorite season for motorcycle adventures, we did not have a good season for it this year! The last time I was on my bike was October 1st and it was 87 degrees. Since then, it has been consistently in the 50s, especially on the weekends. Except a warm up for this week, but kept introducing rain and then not sure how much or when. However, I took a shot with taking today off with the last forecast expecting it to rain early morning and much later in the day. Boy did I ever hit the jackpot for today!

Since it was during the week, I only let a few people know who are retired, and I had two takers, Brad and Denise. Denise was not thrilled about leaving before the roads dried off from the morning rain, so we bumped it another hour out from our intended ETD. Brad met me here and we ventured over to Denise’s. Although the roads weren’t completely dry, we were going to be heading in the direction which received much less rain than us, if any at all.

From Denise’s we took Hwy 45 south to Hwy 28 west, and then Hwy 175 south with a stop for fuel and the bathroom in Theresa. I told them I did not want to fuel up at all in Washington County since everything has ethanol, and they seemed appreciative of that.

We continued to Hartford with a stop for lunch at the Mindshaft. I had preferred to find something around Holy Hill, but the Copper Dock was closed and the other places near there which I checked.

From there we took Hwy 60 east to Kettle Moraine Drive past Pike Lake and eventually onto Cty K. Then west on Hwy 167 for a stop to take a long shot photo of Holy Hill (HH), and luckily for me, the farmer had already taken down his corn in the field by Dublin Road so I could walk out onto it to get a good zoom photo. We took Dublim Road to Donegal and stopped on the south side of Holy Hill to take a photo before heading back to stop in and go up the one steeple. Although, I was told Sunday (only 51 degrees) was extremely busy everywhere around HH, and I knew this still wasn’t so bad, I was a bit anxious about all the people and traffic. Denise was the only one to go all the way up the steeple. Due to how many people were in there, Brad and I opted to stop at the last tier before that and hung out waiting for Denise. After that we got some much needed water before heading out.

I took us to St. Augustine to Hogsback Road and then it was time to head back since we spent so much time off the bikes, that we didn’t have enough time to take all of the ones I had planned. Especially not since we wanted to stop at Kelley’s for ice cream too. I took a whole bunch of back roads to get to Kelley’s and only to find out they are closed on Tuesdays. So, after dropping a whole can of Seafoam into my tank, we headed to Fondy to stop at the DQ on Fond du Lac Ave.

After that we stopped to top off one more time with fuel in preparation of this probably being my last ride of the season and I arrived home around 5:30.

Although I had a great season of riding and today was exceptionally gorgeous, it is always so depressing knowing it is the  last hurrah!
