May 2 Long Way to Wautoma

Since the weather was going to be warmer than average for the weekend, I planned a route last night for Kevin to load into his GPS to go around Lake Winnebago on the east side and eventually west to Wautoma, and then a bit south and back east. I chose a bunch of country roads we had never been on before, so I wasn’t sure if any would be gravel. Well, yep two were. I decided to forego the first one, but we took the 2nd (White River Road) which was really packed down. There was a bunch of logging that happened there recently, so I stopped at one point and took some photos. We also had to re-route once because of construction on Cty GG and also on Hwy 76.

It was pretty windy and cloudy most of the ride, but for the most part a very comfortable for riding temp wise, except when going along the south side of Lake Poygan with the northwest wind blowing the cooler air off the lake.

We weren’t sure what we were going to do for lunch. Once we were hungry, we were going through Winneconne and stopped at the Fin N Feather, but we didn’t want to find their menu online and then wait for them to make our food. So, we decided to stop at the BP in Poy Sippi to grab a sandwich. They were very busy with lots of bikes. We waited until some of the patrons cleared out before going in. We ended up grabbing some sandwiches with some chips, and then went to their fireman’s park to eat and walk around the dam. While we were walking back to our bikes a guy showed up with a bucket that had a huge snapping turtle in it and he released it in the river.

From there we headed west and a bit south eventually ending up in Wautoma and going south from there on Hwy 22 to Cottonville Road east, and a bunch of other back roads before making it into Berlin, then Ripon and Olden Road to Cty C, then Hwy 23 back to town because Cty N was closed.

I am so glad that I can still do my most favorite thing… ride, during this situation because I do not want to start socializing within close proximity of friends and family until the COVID-19 curve comes down.

Just shy of 200 miles, dang!
