Aug 14 Northern Kettles

Well this weekend the weather wasn’t very cooperative for riding and today was my friend Alan’s vintage ride which started around 9:15 a.m. out of Beachwood, but I had a hair apt in the morning. Plus it was misting out at that time.

However, I mentioned to some of my riding pals that I was interested in a smallish ride today later in the morning and I had a couple of takers, Russ and Mark, and we met at the Club around 11:30.

I told them I was going to plan to ride through the northern Kettle Moraine with eventually making a stop at the old marsh lodge, Three Guys & A Grill just outside of Elkhart Lake.

It was only overcast when we left, but we ran into some mist and wet roads on our way to Dundee where we stopped for me to get gas and use the restroom. After that it was just cloudy. However, the roads through the Kettles under the tree canopies were still wet. I think we even passed some of the bikes heading south which were maybe on Alan’s vintage ride.

At one point when I turned a corner there was a fawn on the left side of the road and her mama/doe on the right. The fawn cut across the road by her mom and off they went into the woods. I gave a motion to the guys there were deer in the area, which was a good wake-up call for me to slow down.

Since you cannot get across Hwy 23 anymore at Cty A, I took 23 up to Cty S which in my opinion is still part of the Kettles even though it isn’t marked part of Scenic Drive. It is very curvy with lots of elevation changes and takes you into the south side of Glenbeulah.

I made a pit stop at the Mill Pond in Glenbeulah with hopes to see some crawfish, but it was too cloudy for that.

Turns out neither of the guys have ever been to Three Guys or the marsh, so that was a nice surprise for me to show them a new destination.

As mentioned, pretty much a smallish ride, but still felt good to get out there and the guys were great company.
