I had planned on riding both days over this weekend, and Brad was the one person I found available, but yesterday I was feeling off with not much sleep. So, I decided to only get out today and with Kevin gone on a camping trip, it was back to old schooling with not being able to pre-plan the route. At least a really good route. I, however, thought out a route to take us to Jug’s for lunch and then over to Horicon and/or Mayville for a cream stop.
I asked Brad to meet me at 10 at the former Baker’s Cheese on Cty G, so I could do a run by the former Ditter Farm, since it was Father’s Day, and in memory of my Dad. On my way there to meet Brad, I spent some good time reflecting on how much I missed my Pa, and some of the great memories, etc.
I was early as usual, and took a call from Scott while waiting for Brad and while I was on the phone, I happened to realize they had a yellow bike inside the Sargento’s Gift Shop. So, I walked over to check it out. Sure enough, it was a Harley with a side-car, painted like cheese. Hah!
After Brad showed up, we did a little catching up before heading out on Cty G south along Long Lake and through Dundee. I then took Youth Camp Road to get back onto the marked Scenic Route south through the Northern Kettles, and then Cty D west to Jug’s. We arrived there at 10:55, so they weren’t open yet and some other people waiting as well. However, it wasn’t too crazy and we were able to get a table right away, and our food order in before a large group.
From there we headed out on Cty D west to 175 and 83 south, then taking Arther Road to P and Woodland west to Hwy 67. When I was viewing the route previously, it showed some spots of 67 with some type of construction and when we got to it, there were road closed signs, but I decided to check it out anyway and lucky for us it looked to just need final shoulder work and painting. We took that north to Cty S west out of Iron Ridge and then Main Street north along the Golf Course south of Horicon, and into Horicon. Where I stopped to gas up. We also got to see the damage downtown caused from the straight line winds that ripped through there two weeks ago, as the buildings were still boarded and tarped up. And, when we arrived at the Ice Cream Station, there wasn’t anyone outside which made me think maybe they were closed, but thankfully they were open, and actually quite busy inside.
We opted to sit outside to eat our cream since they too like Jug’s had the A/C cranking and by this time it was quite overcast but still warmer outside than inside.
From there I took some back roads into Mayville where we seen a mama doe with her babies, and then past the golf course to McCarther road along the Rock River which was so full of potholes they decided to gravel it instead of repair them. Oh well, it was fine, but probably dusty for Brad with me leading. When we turned onto the next road there was a Sheriff heading north with his lights and sirens going, so we pulled over. From there when we reconnected on McCarther to head to Theresa, even though it was marked closed, but I was hoping maybe we’d get lucky again. Not this time! So, we turned around and took the closest road south to Allen Road east and then Cty P north to connect with 175 north through Theresa and to Lomira.
Well, when we arrived into Lomira we seen exactly where that Sheriff was headed as there he was with another one and a car that nailed a power pole head on. Hmmm, seems a bit suspect that alcohol may have been involved based on the direction they hit it on the main drag. Someone was having a bad day!
When we got to Cty B, I broke off to heading east and Brad continued north on 175.
Although it was a tad bit chilly and the wind coming out of the east, it never felt too drastically chilly at any point on my way home. So, I opted to stay on 67 to the entrance through the Kettles into Greenbush and then 23 to Cty S through them again into Glenbeulah, and remembered to stay away from Road America as it was close to the end of the Indy race. And, sure enough, when I went to cross 67 on Garton Road, the State Trooper was already staged on that stretch near the track for traffic egress.
Although our day started off sunny and gorgeous, it did cloud up pretty good, as predicted. I still thought it was pretty warm and great day of riding!
